UX and Agile

a panel discussion on User Experience in an Agile Environment

Thursday, January 28, 2010

Organic, Bloomfield Hills

Practicing user experience as part of an agile project can be challenging. How do we provide for a consistent user experience across the entire product when the development is broken up into short iterations? How do we perform typical user experience design tasks like user research, persona development, user testing, or UI design in an agile environment?
Bring your questions. This panel of experts will discuss best practices they have discovered.

    @redcrew: Intros by @anthviv for panelists on Agile in UX: Josephine Scott (@techsmith), @hsgidley, @jcr, Serena Rosenhan & Carissa Demetris #miupa

    @redcrew: Josie is explaining the agile cycles: Develop two tracks: one for interaction designer, one for developer. #miupa

    @redcrew: If you’re not communicating, the agile process will not work. No throwing over the wall. < -- sounds good to me! #miupa @redcrew: Typical agile iterative process - integral part is planning, while many agile would disagree according to @jcr #miupa @redcrew: Design has to happen ahead of the implementation. Work ahead, follow behind method. #agile #miupa @redcrew: Ideally you're in same room w/other team members every day. It's not a work envt where you do research & leave. #miupa #agile @redcrew: Agile should be run with expert developers in a familiar tool. #miupa @redcrew: Project management & #agile - @hsgidley explains how some companies have stumbled implementing agile. #miupa @redcrew: Iteration 0 of #agile - 2-4 weeks in length, create personas, initial usability, initial story cards #miupa @redcrew: In concepting phase, consider writing usability studies on current products. What are ppl struggling w/using your product? #miupa #agile @redcrew: Ah! @hsgidley is talking about fivesecondtest.com & heatmaps during #agile & #ux discussion. @nickdenardis, wish you were here! #miupa @redcrew: Agile is a very good fit for user experience, since it fits nicely into an iterative cycle. #miupa @redcrew: Do the simplest thing that can work, for problem you're trying to solve w/in your timeframe. Scale your efforts. #miupa #agile @redcrew: Myths in #agile: 1. No planning -> Wrong, almost everything in agile is planned. 2. No documentation. -> Wrong, lots of docs. #miupa

    @redcrew: Interesting, only about 10% of ppl at Agile in #UX presentation are using #agile in their workplace. #miupa

    @crfarnum: At MI UPA – UX and Agile – Simplicity-Scale-Iteration… repeat! http://twitpic.com/108fle

    @redcrew: Agile may change the scheduling of a project, but it doesn’t change the fundamental work that needs to be done. #agile #miupa

    @redcrew: Agile is extremely difficult to do in widely disparate geographic teams. #miupa #ux #agile

    @redcrew: Be ready to adapt when implementing #agile. Introduce the agile components that work for your project. #ux #miupa

    @redcrew: Need to step back every once in a while says @jcr in answer to question from @crfarnum. #agile #ux #miupa

    @redcrew: Carissa Demetris recommends using @balsamiq for wireframing. Simple to use, efficient, & easy to change. #miupa #ux #agile

    @redcrew: Nothing wrong with using pencil & paper for quick wireframing. #miupa #ux #agile

    @redcrew: @cmdrfalafel I thought you handled the MI Usability Prof. Association intro quite well Mike! #miupa #ux #agile

    @redcrew: How do you balance designers & user experience on teams? Barb Hernandez from @techsmith: Change the focus. It’s about the customer. #miupa

    @redcrew @keithinstone Missed you at the MIUPA Agile in UX discussion tonight.
